First Grade Skills
from The Diary of a First Grade Teacher
First grade skills can be challenging for some students and easy for others. It all depends on IF the student is ready ...
Readiness
Readiness is a real thing that all primary-level teachers talk about. Your child is READY for first grade if s/he is developmentally ready (growth-wise) AND if s/he has mastered the kindergarten-level skills and concepts.
While growth cannot be rushed, there are oodles of other things that kindergarten teachers do every day to make sure your child is as prepared as possible for the first grade.
First grade is organized into the following content areas:
Language Arts ... includes lessons in listening, following directions, vocabulary building, reading, phonics, writing, spelling, grammar.
Math
Science
Social Studies
Enrichment Areas ... include music, art, library, physical education, foreign languages, etc. It all depends on the funds available in your school district.
Please Note ... While there are many academic concepts for your child to master, always remember learning to socialize and maneuver his or her way through school AND life in general are MAJOR life skills also.
